The Dauer 962 Le Mans ( Le Mans ) is one of the Dauer Sportwagen GmbH produced sports cars from the 1990s .

History

Because of the great success of the racing car Porsche 962 Porsche had a comprehensive customer program. As with a production vehicle, many components were therefore available "off the shelf". On this basis, Jochen duration built a supercar, the duration 962 LM. In 1991 bought Jochen Dauer Porsche initially five new 962 chassis with the numbers 169, 172, 173, 175 and 176.From the chassis No. 169 was the first painted in yellow street version with the new number 001. the first two racing versions were the sponsored by Shell 002 (chassis 173) and the international sponsored by FAT 003 (chassis 176), The car was first presented in 1993 at the IAA in Frankfurt. Six of the duration 962 LM owned  by the Sultan of Brunei .

The Dauer 962 LM is based essentially on the Porsche 962, but is approved for road traffic. A street legal was only possible after a backward camera was installed, because the view to the rear would otherwise be too limited. The motor is a flat 6-cylinder  boxer engine  with 2994 cubic capacity. The cylinders are air-cooled, the cylinder heads water-cooled. Charging takes place via two turbochargers , each with a charge air cooler, which achieves an output of 537 kW (730 hp) at 7600 rpm and a torque of 700 Nm at 5000 rpm. The vehicle accelerates from standstill in 2.6 seconds to 100 km / h and in 7.3 seconds to 200 km / h, the maximum speed is reached according to the vehicle registration at 402 km / h. Independently, 404.6 km / h were measured. At the time was 962 called the "fastest street-legal production car in the world".

The ground clearance is hydraulically adjustable by pressing a button. In normal operation, the car automatically drops slightly closer to the road at 80 km / h. In the left doorstep there is a small "boot". There is a two-piece suitcase made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic available, which makes optimum use of the available space.

In 1994 , they wanted to admit at the 24 Hours of Le Mans only GT vehicles. The Porsche 962 did not fall into this class as a Group C sports car . However, participation in the GT1 class was only a single street-legal model. The start of the duration 962 LM Sport was possible, as it was for the duration LM road legal. The car with the serial number 003 was brought with the drivers Yannick Dalmas , Hurley Haywood and Mauro Baldi at the start and could reach the overall victory. The car with the serial number 002 with the drivers Hans-Joachim Stuck , Danny Sullivan and Thierry Boutsen drove to third place.

The 962 LM (street version) and Duration 962 LM Sport (racing version for Le Mans 1994).Both versions differ only slightly. Thus, the racing version has a flat bottom, since the regulations of Le Mans changed in January 1994 and thus the original, negative pressure generating underbody construction was inadmissible. To still have plenty of downforce, a two-bladed rear spoiler was attached, lengthens the nose and deepens the rear. Other modifications for the race were stronger brakes and wider tires (front 285/35 ZR 18 instead of 265/35 ZR 18 and rear 345/35 ZR 18 instead of 285/40 ZR 18), in addition, the performance decreased because of restrictions imposed by the Regulations for about 600 hp (441 kW). Unlike the racing version, the street version can be equipped with extras such as air conditioning or a DVD player.

The road version has a registration document registered top speed of 402 kilometers per hour , were in November 1998 at the Volkswagen test track at Ehra-Lessien even officially 404.6 kilometers per hour measured. The approximately 40 km / h more compared to the racing version is explained by more power, lower downforce and the low cw value of 0.31.
