The fourth Altima appeared on the model year 2006 on a new platform. The four- and six-cylinder engines were taken from the predecessor, the V6 but now made 201 kW / 273 hp. Standard was a six-speed manual transmission, instead of the traditional automatic, a continuously variable CVT automatic was used.
Since 2006, the Altima was also offered as a hybrid vehicle with the four-cylinder engine, an electric motor (40hp) and the continuously variable automatic. It was sold in the US only in certain states: California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Oregon, Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey.
The trunk dimensions are the same as the previous generation Altima. It also has redesigned wheels. And high-intensity discharge (HID) xenon headlights are available on V6 models.
INTERIOR
Like all new Nissan products, the Rock-hard plastic has given way to much softer plastic, there are cup holders everywhere: three in the center console, two in the passenger panels; in total, there are nine. The glove compartment has doubled in size. The interiors are available in three colors (Charcoal, Blonde, and Frost), and leather seats are optional. Amenities on the options list include a push-to-start ignition system with smart key, a Bose-developed nine-speaker audio system, and a Bluetooth phone system.
In May 2007 began the production of the Altima Coupé on shortened wheelbase (2675 instead of 2776 mm) with the technology of the sedan.
MECHANICAL
The four-cylinder engine remains the base offering for the Altima, and the 3.5-liter V6, a true all-rounder, will take over for the more upscale trims. There are two transmission systems for both the V6 and four-cylinder engines. A new six-speed manual transmission and Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVI (Continuously Variable Transmission) replace the conventional automatic transmission. The V6 benefits from new twin induction, reduced friction, improved cylinder head cooling, and new twin knock sensors.
Combining the Nissan 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with new hybrid system components supplied by Toyota, the Altima offers a combined output of nearly 200 horsepower. The hybrid model will be mated to a CVT transmission. The four-cylinder offers an increased intake manifold, a better compression ratio (9.6:1 compared to 1998), and reduced friction characteristics.
