M 176 , M 177 and M 178 are model of a V8 engine motor series of the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Mercedes-AMG , the beginning of February 2015, Mercedes-AMG C 63 ( M 177 )  and in early March 2015, Mercedes-AMG GT ( M 178 ) . The variant ( M 176 ) installed in the Mercedes-Benz G 500 was launched in June 2015. These are supercharged gasoline engines with eight cylinders in V-arrangement and 90 ° cylinder bank angle.

The variants M 177 and M 178 are "one man, one engine"hand built in the engine shop at Mercedes-AMG according to the principle in Affalterbach mounted, of the M 176 at the engine plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim .

Technology

The V8 engines are derived from the four-cylinder in - line engines of the M 133 series  . Two cylinder blocks are combined with the crankcase. The cylinder dimensions have been retained, the capacity is therefore 3982 cc (2 x 1991 cc) with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratio is 10.5. For weight and friction reduction are aluminum - forged pistons used, and instead of conventional cylinder liners, the cylinder liners of the aluminum crankcase have an extremely hard and wear resistant, only about 0.1 to 0.15 mm thick coating of iron and carbon. This is going throughArc spraying applied and then honed almost mirror smooth . Friction and wear can be halved by this NANOSLIDE® technology.

The four overhead, adjustable camshafts are driven by a timing chain and operated via roller cam followers each 4 valves per cylinder. The coolant pump is also driven via the timing chain. With a delivery rate of up to 420 l / min, together with the three-stage switching thermostat, it ensures heat regulation.

The M 176 and the variants of the M 177 used in the E 63 have since 2017 a cylinder deactivation in the partial load range (900 / min-3250 / min (M 176) or 1000 / min-3250 / min (M 177)). The cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 are shut down by the inlet and exhaust valves are no longer opened via a zero stroke cam. At the same time, fuel supply and ignition of these cylinders are deactivated. The cylinder deactivation is only active in the driving programs Economy and Comfort .

The two turbochargers generate a maximum of 1.2 bar boost pressure and are mounted close to the outlets between the cylinder heads for a good response. In addition, this improves the heat dissipation from the engine compartment and the unit builds narrower. The change of charge is thus for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz engine from the outside into the interior of the "V".

Two charge air coolers integrated into a separate coolant circuit lower the temperature of the compressed charge air to a maximum of 25 ° C above that of the ambient air.

All variants meet the EU6 emission standard. The M 176 has been fitted as standard with a particulate filter in the exhaust system on the underbody of the vehicle since 2017 .

The fuel is injected into the combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 200 bar via piezo - injectors guided directly in front of the spark plugs.
