The Hyundai Elantra entered in the summer of 2000, the successor to the Hyundai Lantra . Elantra Available in 4-door and 5-door editions offering the choice of 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 DOHC and 2.0 CRDi engine.

In Europe, the two predecessor generations ran under the name Lantra , as Lotus Cars wanted to exclude buyers from a mental link between Elantra and his model Elan . Although the production of which ended in 1992, it remained in the naming until 1996, the entire Elan production line was sold to the former Hyundai-Kia competitors that the Kia Elan roadster made to 1999 After its merger with Hyundai received in mid-2000 Elantra generation also in Europe this name.

The Elantra was only available as a hatchback or notchback sedan . There was no estate version of this anymore, but in April 2001, the compact van Hyundai Matrix was presented as a replacement.

In the autumn of 2003, the Elantra received a facelift to the XD2 and was three years later, Hyundai's stylists gave the  Elantra a sportier appearance. Headlanps, the radator grille, the hood-line and front had all been freshened up updated rear and trunk lid and new rear spoiler. in the fall of 2006, deleted in Europe from the model range. Until the introduction of the i30 in the summer of 2007, therefore, the Accent filled the area between small cars ( Getz ) and middle class ( Sonata ). In Russia, the Hyundai Elantra XD is still produced as a notchback. The manufacturer is TagAZ , which also produces its own vehicles. On the basis of the XD2 platform from 2003 later also the Kia Cerato , as well as with heavily modified form the Softroader Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage . 

This generation of Elantra was the last available in Europe. The following are slightly reduced versions of the compact platform on which the i30 is currently based.

In China, the third generation was built untill 2014.

    The petrol engines until autumn 2003 are certified to Euro 3, then they meet Euro 4. The diesel reached even after the revision, only the Euro 3 standard.
