Mercedes-Benz M 276 V6 petrol engine
M 276
Manufacturer: Mercedes Benz
Production period: since 2011
Style: V , six-cylinder
Engines: 3.0 liters
(2996 cc)
3.5 liters
(3498 cc)
Previous model: M 272
Successor: M 256

The Mercedes-Benz M 276 is a series of six-cylinder - V-engines ( gasoline engines ), the Mercedes-Benzsince the fall of 2010 as a successor to the M-272 produces generation. Compared to its predecessor, the cylinder bank angle is reduced from 90 ° to 60 °, so that even without balance shaft no free mass moments of the first order occur. The main components are manufactured in the engine plant Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt , where the assembly of the engine takes place.

The engine generation is closely related to the eight-cylinders of the M 278 series, although they have 90 ° cylinder bank angles. The M 276 debuted in the spring of 2011 in the facelifted C-Class (model series 204), in the SLK (R 172) and in the CLS (model series 218) as well as in numerous 4Matic models.

At the beginning, only aggregates with 3.5 liters of displacement were used. Since the spring of 2013, a reduced displacement in three-liter engine, which is charged by means of two turbochargers offered.

M 276 DES 35

The displacement of the six-cylinder - V-type engine is 3498 cm³ with a bore of 92.9 mm and a stroke of 86 mm, at a cylinder distance of 106 mm. The compression ratio is 12.2: 1. The crankcase, the pistons and the cylinder head of the engine are made of aluminum, with the cylinder liners made of gray cast iron. In the 225 kW (306 hp) variant, the engine weighs 170.6 kg according to DIN standards. The change of charge is controlled via four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and per cylinder bank two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain . In addition, the engine has a camshaft adjustment for intake and exhaust side.

A third-generation spray-guided gasoline direct injection (200 bar fuel pressure) with BlueDirect combustion technology and piezo injectors is used. This, in conjunction with a multi-ignition and the new stratified combustion process with extended map range including consumption-optimized lean-burn, should contribute to reduced fuel consumption. The power consumption of ancillaries has been lowered. These include an optimized water pump with second-generation heat management, a regulated oil pump, a volume-controlled high-pressure fuel pump and intelligent generator control. Thanks to consistent lightweight construction and intensive fine tuning, engine friction has also been significantly reduced compared to the predecessor engine. Together with the start-stop technology , the shift point shift and friction power reduction, overall improvements in driving efficiency of more than 20 percent were possible.

M 276 DEH 30 LA

The displacement of this variant is 2996 cc with an identical stroke-bore ratio as the 3.5-liter variant (bore 88 mm, stroke 82.1 mm). The compression ratio is 10.7: 1. In the 245 kW (333 hp) variant, the engine weighs 179.2 kg according to DIN standards. To optimize the cylinder bore, the so-called NANOSLIDE® coating is used for the first time in an aluminum die-cast crankcase . This is an iron-carbon layer, which is applied by means of arc wire spraying directly on the aluminum surface and allows high oil retention volume in the cylinder bore.

The engine has a turbocharger with one turbocharger per cylinder bank ( bi-turbo ). The compressed fresh air is cooled in a water-to-air intercooler designed in countercurrent flow and then fed to the cylinder banks via a common charge air distributor. The intercooler has a separate low-temperature cooling water circuit. The first use of this engine variant took place in spring 2013 in the E400 (212 series) .

M 276 DES 35 LA

This variant of the 3.5-liter engine, which has been used since 2014, has now also been converted to turbocharging. However, in contrast to the 3.0-liter variant, the engine still has the stratified combustion process, which requires a NOx storage catalytic converter to comply with the emission limit values.

The Mercedes-Benz M 273 Motor is a petrol engine with eight cylinders in V-arrangement .

The M 273 is the further development of the M 113 . From him he took over cylinder spacing and arrangement. This is technically related to the V6 cylinder gasoline engine M 272 , which originated in the same development cycle. The engines share above all the angle of the two cylinder banks to each other and the distance between the individual cylinders.

The M 273 debuted in September 2005 in the S-Class . Since then, the engine has been used in the E-Class and CLS , in the S and R Class , and also in the CL , SL and CLK , as well as the ML , GL and GSUVs . Successor from 2010 the engine M 278 .

Problems

Basically, this engine is considered extremely reliable. At the same time, early models (until about September 2006) had problems with a deflection gear in the chain drive of the timing chain . Mercedes-Benz used unsuitable hardened material up to that date. As a result, the entire chain drive had to be swapped regularly for affected vehicles. According to Mercedes-Benz from the engine number 088611 a modified spur gear was installed.

Also, the intake manifold made problems. The plastic flaps used therein, which are intended to vary the length of the intake, can coke over time and in extreme cases break off.

Performance increase

In addition to a pure electronics optimization , the result of most providers with 316 kW (430 hp) specify and in various test reports to a significant improvement in acceleration to 200 km / h (up to about 3 s shorter acceleration times)  , more complex conversions with other camshafts and valve springs are available (about 460 hp).

There are also manifolds available, but may not be operated within the scope of the road traffic licensing regulations. Their installation will invalidate the operating permit for the relevant vehicle. In addition, a deterioration caused by the installation of the exhaust emissions of the engine can lead to the fulfillment of a tax offense existence.

Mercedes Benz
Mercedes-Benz V6 petrol engine
M 272
Manufacturer: Mercedes Benz
Production period: since 2004
Style: V , six-cylinder
Engines: 2.5 liters (2496 cc)
to 3.5 liters (3498 cc)
Previous model: M 112
Successor: M 276

The M 272 is a petrol engine with six cylinders in V-arrangement from Mercedes-Benz . Since 2004, with the introduction of the new SLK-Class ( R 171 series ), it has been offered as a naturally aspirated engine with classic intake manifold injection in most Mercedes-Benz passenger car models; since 2006 in the CLS-Class ( C 219 series ) also with direct injection (CGI ). The engine type is related to the V8 cylinder gasoline engine M 273which originated in the same development cycle. This is why the M 272 also has the cylinder bank angle of 90 ° which is not typical for six-cylinder V engines, which requires an additional balancing shaft.

The M 272 and M 273 engines, in contrast to their three-valve M 112 and M 113 precursors, have four valves, one centrally located spark plug per combustion chamber and two chain-driven cams per cylinder bank ( DOHC ). The valves are operated via roller rocker arms with fixed hydraulic valve clearancecompensation. The intake and exhaust camshafts can be adjusted independently of each other continuously in phase. In addition, the motors have a variable intake manifold with two switchable lengths of the ducts to the individual cylinders.

The engine block of the M 272 is made of light metal, with cast-in cylinder liners made of an Al - Si alloy. The crankshaft bearing caps made of gray cast iron are bolted to stabilize the engine block also laterally. The cylinder bank angle is 90 °, and the split crankpin crankshaft sit side by side without intermediate cheek. Above the crankshaft in the cylinder V, as with the precursor, there is a balancing shaft for eliminating the first-order free mass forces, which is driven together with the camshafts by a double-sleeve chain.

In the suction tubes tumble flaps are pivoted, which generate at partial load turbulence of the mixture, whereby the combustion is faster and more uniform. As a result, a higher proportion of exhaust gas in the mixture is possible, which is controlled by the adjustment of the exhaust camshaft. The advantage of this "internal exhaust gas recirculation" is a higher efficiency through de-throttling and higher effective compression due to the larger cylinder filling.

Use

The engine type is used in the C- , E- and S-Class , as well as in the CLS , CLK , SLK and SL , as well as in the R-Class and SUVs GLK and ML , furthermore in the Sprinter W 906 and the Vito / Viano as 3.5 liters with 190 kW (258 hp).

Mercedes offers the M 272 in six different versions:

  • M 272 KE 25: Model designation "230" or "250"
  • M 272 KE 30: Model designation "280" or "300"
  • M 272 KE 35: Model designation "350"
  • M 272 KE 35: Model name "350 Sportmotor"
  • M 272 KE 35: Model "S 400 Hybrid" with 205 + 15 kW (279 + 20 hp)
  • M 272 DE 35: Model name "350 CGI"

The CGI version of the 3.5-liter engine was in the CLS and the end of 2007 in the E-Class 211 series and its successor series 212 / 207 available.

Since the beginning of 2008, both the SLK (R171) and the facelifted SL (R230 Mopf 2) have been offered with a new 3.5-liter sports engine. This has the normal intake manifold injection, but has been increased in performance (including by raising the maximum speed). He makes between 224 and 232 kW (305-316 hp). Background to the sports engine: The more modern CGI machine is a bit higher due to the design and therefore does not fit under the flat bonnet of the Roadster.

This engine was mainly offered with the automatic transmission 7G-Tronic, but also with 6-speed manual transmission (eg in the SLK R 171). Basically, this engine is considered reliable, the first versions had problems (material wear) with a sprocket on the balancer shaft . Successor of the M 272 is the Mercedes-Benz M 276 .

M 176 , M 177 and M 178 are model of a V8 engine motor series of the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Mercedes-AMG , the beginning of February 2015, Mercedes-AMG C 63 ( M 177 )  and in early March 2015, Mercedes-AMG GT ( M 178 ) . The variant ( M 176 ) installed in the Mercedes-Benz G 500 was launched in June 2015. These are supercharged gasoline engines with eight cylinders in V-arrangement and 90 ° cylinder bank angle.

The variants M 177 and M 178 are "one man, one engine"hand built in the engine shop at Mercedes-AMG according to the principle in Affalterbach mounted, of the M 176 at the engine plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim .

Technology

The V8 engines are derived from the four-cylinder in - line engines of the M 133 series  . Two cylinder blocks are combined with the crankcase. The cylinder dimensions have been retained, the capacity is therefore 3982 cc (2 x 1991 cc) with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratio is 10.5. For weight and friction reduction are aluminum - forged pistons used, and instead of conventional cylinder liners, the cylinder liners of the aluminum crankcase have an extremely hard and wear resistant, only about 0.1 to 0.15 mm thick coating of iron and carbon. This is going throughArc spraying applied and then honed almost mirror smooth . Friction and wear can be halved by this NANOSLIDE® technology.

The four overhead, adjustable camshafts are driven by a timing chain and operated via roller cam followers each 4 valves per cylinder. The coolant pump is also driven via the timing chain. With a delivery rate of up to 420 l / min, together with the three-stage switching thermostat, it ensures heat regulation.

The M 176 and the variants of the M 177 used in the E 63 have since 2017 a cylinder deactivation in the partial load range (900 / min-3250 / min (M 176) or 1000 / min-3250 / min (M 177)). The cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 are shut down by the inlet and exhaust valves are no longer opened via a zero stroke cam. At the same time, fuel supply and ignition of these cylinders are deactivated. The cylinder deactivation is only active in the driving programs Economy and Comfort .

The two turbochargers generate a maximum of 1.2 bar boost pressure and are mounted close to the outlets between the cylinder heads for a good response. In addition, this improves the heat dissipation from the engine compartment and the unit builds narrower. The change of charge is thus for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz engine from the outside into the interior of the "V".

Two charge air coolers integrated into a separate coolant circuit lower the temperature of the compressed charge air to a maximum of 25 ° C above that of the ambient air.

All variants meet the EU6 emission standard. The M 176 has been fitted as standard with a particulate filter in the exhaust system on the underbody of the vehicle since 2017 .

The fuel is injected into the combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 200 bar via piezo - injectors guided directly in front of the spark plugs.

The Mercedes-Benz M 278 is an engine series from Mercedes-Benz, and the successor to the M 273 generation. It is an 8-cylinder V- engine . In contrast to the equally new six-cylinder M 276 , the cylinder bank angle remained at 90 °, although the engines are closely related.

Compared to its predecessor, the engines are significantly more economical and powerful, among other things by gasoline direct injection . In addition, intelligent generator management and a demand-controlled engine oil pump, fully variable injection pressure of 100 to 200 bar, twin turbochargers with air-water charge air cooling, exhaust gas turbocharger with wastegate valves, new cast pistons and engine electronics with Controlled Efficiency stop-start function. Power is transmitted via the 7- speed automatic transmission or the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

The introduction of the engines took place gradually in autumn 2010, starting with the S-Class (Type 221) and the CL-Class (Type 216). The AMG variant is given the designation M 157 for the turbo-charged variant or M 152 for the vacuum variant with cylinder deactivation .

Variants

The new eight-cylinder replace the previous 500 and 63 AMG. They are available in two displacement levels:
