In early 1971, a brand new Caprice 2nd generation series came out as the Series 166 / 1B / 1N,. The combination models of Caprice were still also as the Kingswood Estate.

History

The wheelbase for the saloon and coupe had grown by 2 ½ " in the station wagons by 6". The massive, heavily contoured front showed a low grille and turn signals back to the corners of the vehicle. All the big Chevrolets got disc brakes on all four wheels. The engine power dropped by 5 bhp each. The all-coil suspension were refined for improvements in ride and noise reduction.

Chevrolet Caprice Second generation

The 1972 Caprice received a facelift with a revised grille and new bumper with increased protection A slight overhaul of the vehicle front in 1972 caused the radiator grille to shrink in height .The rear bumper now had the triple taillights in the bumper. The wheelbase of sedan and coupe increased again by ½ ". Starting this year, the engine power with the most powerful V8 engine had 7440 cc displacement and made 270 hp (199 kW)At the beginning, a three-speed manual transmission was standard when the model was introduced, although at mid-year, the Turbo Hydramatic transmission and variable-ratio power steering became standard equipment on all Caprice models and lower-line models fitted with a V8 engine. V8 engines were used as drive with 5735 cc and 165 hp (121 kW), 6554 cc and 175 hp (129 kW) or 7440 cc and 225 hp (165 kW). Optional engines included 300 horsepower (206 net) 402 cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8 and 365 hp (272 kW) gross (285 hp (213 kW) net) 454 Turbo Jet V8 . When equipped with dual exhaust, the 400 Turbo Jet was rated at 260 hp (194 kW).

The new model name was series 1N for this year .Inside were revised interiors featuring a two-spoke steering wheel and new instrument panel wood grain trim on the dash also a  center front seat armrest.

Since Biscayne was discontinued in 1973, there were only three series in the upper middle class, the Bel Air , the Impala and the Caprice. The combination models were again called Caprice Station Wagon , and there were two new models: a four-door sedan with B-pillars and a two-door convertible. The cars got a slight overhaul of the front and rear view and got a little longer. A new  grille, 5 mph (8 km/h) crash absorbing front bumper and revised taillights. The performance of all engines was reduced by 10-20 nhp under the impact of the oil crisis .

Chevrolet Caprice Second generation

In 1974 there were no changes, except for a slightly revised front end , which differed for the first time with its chromium-framed grille from that of the cheaper models A new s a remote control for the passenger-side outside rear mirror. . In 1975 catalysts were introduced. As the second coupe variant came a "Landau". Otherwise, there were few changes.

In 1975 as fuel economy became a bigger priority the New Efficiency System. A new "Econominder" gauge package included a temperature gauge and a "fuel econominder as well as less powerfull engines with two-barrel carburetors.

In 1976,Only minor changes were made the Bel Air fell from the model range of the upper middle class. Thus, there were only the Impala and the Caprice in the range of big Chevrolets, which was renamed the Caprice Classic Series 1B this year . As a new model, a four-door sports sedan came to the Cabriolet fell away again. The front view was again slightly revised and now showed a prominently placed forward, narrower grille, flanked by rectangular triple headlights in chrome frame.
