The second generation was released in January 2001 on the new GMT-800 chassis as a vehicle of model year 2002.  By the sale of the first generation, the two generations were sold at the same time. Visually, this generation stands out clearly from its predecessor. From this model year, both a 2WD and a 4WD system was offered. Escalade's SUVs share a platform with GM's other full-size SUVs, including the GMC Yukon and Denali, but have more power and unique features.

In spring 2002, the Escalade EXT was introduced for the first time Cadillac's luxury SUV wagon gets an extended-length.  The Escalade EXT, meanwhile, is a gilded version of the Chevrolet Avalanche crossover SUV/pickup truck. This pickup version has a vehicle cab for five people that can board through four doors. The 610 mm longer EXT version is based on the longer chassis of the Chevrolet Suburban / GMC Yukon XL. New for all three Escalades are standard power-adjustable gas and brake pedals and optional XM satellite radio.

Cadillac Escalade specifications 2nd Gen (2001-2006)

From autumn 2002, the Escalade ESV was available. This long version of the vehicle also offered 610 mm more in length and more space for luggage or an extra row of seats. Like the EXT version, the ESV version is based on the longer chassis of the Chevrolet Suburban / GMC Yukon XL. The ESV adds 22 inches to the length of the regular-length Escalade, primarily as cargo space. Two 2nd-row buckets are standard on ESV and optional on the regular Escalade for 7-passenger capacity. Both seat up to eight when equipped with the 2nd-row bench seat.

As an engine, two engines were available. The 5.3-liter V8 engine ( 5.3L Vortec 5300 V8 ) from the Chevrolet Tahoe of the same model year and a high-output version of the 6.0-liter V8 engine ( 6.0L Vortec HO 6000 V8 ), which was installed in the GMC Yukon Denali of the same model year. From early 2003, the ESP system "Stabilitrac" was standard equipment. In autumn 2003, the list of standard equipment was extended again. Thus, the equipment now includes individual seats in the rear and a tire air pressure control system (in all models except for the EXT version). At full-throttle Cadillac 6.0-liter Escalade SUVs at about 8.5 sec 0-60 mph, the 2WD 5.3-liter version at 9.5 sec. AWD SUVs average 14.3-15.6 mpg in city/highway driving.

Standard are front side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, Cadillac's automatic-adjusting road-sensing suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, and rear-obstacle-warning and OnStar assistance systems. Dashboard shares layout with Chevy/GMC versions, but Cadillacs get a more classier-looking instrumentation. Plenty of head and leg room, Helpful audio/visual rear-obstacle system warns of unseen objects when backing up.

2005 appeared a platinum edition of the vehicle. Extra features of this version included 20-inch chrome wheels, heated and cooled cup holder, three DVD screens and some chrome trim.

The regular Escalade offers rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. The ESV is AWD only. AWD Escalades have a 6.0-liter V8 and tow up to 7800 1b, 2WD models have a 5.3 V8 and tow 7300 lb. EXT is a 4-dr crew cab with a "midgate" separating cab from cargo bed. The rear window removes and the midgate folds along with the rear seat to extend the bed from 5.3 ft to 8.1 .

towing capacity is 7400 lb. All AWD Escalades have antiskid control. The power-adjustable pedals work with the standard seat-memory system.
