The McLaren 720S is a sports car from McLaren with a four-liter V8 mid-engine  built from 2017 on.

History

The vehicle was first shown to the public in March 2017 as the successor to the McLaren 650S at the 87th Geneva Motor Show . Since May 2017, the supercar is priced from 247,350 euros at the dealers. Early December 2018 McLaren presented the 720S as Spider . This came in March 2019 at prices from 273,000 euros to the dealers.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2017 Lego presented a replica of the original size 720S. The approximately 280,000 building blocks assembled six employees of McLaren and Lego in about 2,000 hours. Weighing 1.6 tons, the Lego model weighs around 300 kilograms more than the production vehicle.

The chassis  is based on a modified Monocage II , a monocoque in carbon , which is lighter and stiffer than the 650S.

The car features a new 4.0 liter (3994 cc) twin-turbo engine with V8 architecture , which is essentially a reworking of the previous 3.8 liter (3799 cc) produced by Ricardo. Each of the two turbochargers has a twin-scroll exhaust nut ; moreover, the two turbos are electrically implemented - as reported in the technical specifications for this model on the McLaren website - a world first on production cars that is borrowed from the world of Formula 1 , in order to reduce turbolag to almost zero . 41% of the engine components are unpublished. The engine produces an output of 720 hp at 7250 rpm, the figure of which gives the car its name of 720S ; the maximum torque is 770 Nm available at 5500 rpm. The British sports car has a dry weight of 1283 kg, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.8 seconds and from 0 to 200 km / h in 7.8 seconds. The top speed is 341 km / h and the 1/4 mile is covered in 10.3 seconds. The 720S has CO 2 emissions of 249 g / km, a reduction of around 10% compared to the 650S.

McLaren 720S Technical data

720S Velocity

The McLaren Special Operations section unveiled the McLaren 720S Velocity one day after the 720S was unveiled. The car features a red livery and a carbon fiber hood. In addition, the wheels are made of aluminum painted in metallic bronze. The interior has Alcantara Carbon Black finishes with red stitching and carbon fiber details.

720S Spider

The 720S Spider was presented in December 2018. Thanks to the monocoque structure used in the 720S, the Spider does not need additional reinforcements to compensate for the loss of torsional stiffness due to the absence of the roof. The monocoque has however been modified and loses the longitudinal reinforcement bar on the roof that connects the front to the rear of the car. The Spider weighs 45kg more than its coupe counterpart due to the retractable roof system and mechanisms. The roof is a single piece of carbon fiber and takes 11 seconds to open or close, 6 seconds faster than the 650S Spider. The roof can be operated up to 50 km / h.

The engine and transmission remain the same as the coupe with the engine generating the same amount of power. The Spider accelerates from 0 to 97 km / h in 2.9 seconds, from 0 to 193 km / h (120 mph) in 7.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 341 km / h with the roof closed. Top speed is reduced by 16 km / h (10 mph) with the roof open.
