The Commer Cob is a 7 cwt delivery van introduced in early 1956 based on the Hillman Husky, itself a derivative of the Hillman Minx Mark VIII.

History

First produced in the latter part of 1954 the Husky was fitted with the 1265cc. side valve engine which had been in production for some years. For light commercial use, a variant of this basic design, the Cob, was introduced a short while afterwards, and for all practical mechanical purposes was near identical to the Husky specifications.

Detail modifications occasioned by development, to suit production require-ments and consumer needs, were made to both vehicles during the course of
the next three years both the Husky and the Cob were fitted with the 1390cc. ohv engine and brought into line with Rootes Group products.Initially powered by a Rootes' 1,265cc sidevalve engine later with a 1,390 cc (83 cu in) straight-4  and 43 hp and torque 66.4 lbs. A 7cwt load space and powerful hydraulic brakes and modern dampers for the time.

Transmission and final drive to the rear road wheels are entirely conventional. Identification of vehicles is by chassis numbers and these are to be found stamped on a plate fixed to the engine side of the scuttle. This number is also stamped on the offside of the front portion of the chassis frame and is visible from inside the bonnet. The engine number is stamped on the nearside of the cylinder block.
