Volkswagen's Corrado was one of the best-handling front-wheel drive cars in the world. Based on the excellent Golf Mkll platform, it was never intended as a replacement for the VWs ailing Scirocco because it was far too good for that. For the installation of the larger VR6 engine, a redesign of the front cross member and a change of the bonnet was necessary. The measure was complemented by wider, front fenders , wider front apron with a modern grille , slightly modified rear bumper, new fog lights - and front turn signal unit, and new headlights for the year .Only with VR6 models had a split rear seat as standard equipment

The Corrado got revised spring and shock rates and with its front heavy weight bias (64:36) was brilliant through corners, suffering virtually no understeer. The chassis was so good that it easily handled the powerful VR6, launched in 1991. 'The engine used a very narrow 'V' (15 degrees) to make it compact, and although it had been used in the Golf before, for the Corrado it was bored out an extra 4.2ci (7()cc) for more power, plus the compression was raised to 10:1. A subtle form of traction control was used, so when a wheel was spinning, the brake on it would come on until its speed matched the other side. Other tricks included a self-raising spoiler.
