Auto Bug Company
Automotive manufacturer of Norwalk, Ohio.United States from 1909 to 1910.
History
The founder, Arthur E. Skadden previously plant manager at the hardware manufacturer Pressed Radiator Company in New Castle (Pennsylvania) . He founded the Auto-Bug Company in March 1909 in Norwalk, Ohio , to build a highwheeler he designed . The vehicle was offered as an auto-bug in different versions with identical technology. The name contains a pun, because in English means "Bug" Beetle , which may relate to the wheels. But it can also be the short form of "buggy" meant. Motor Buggy was a common name for such cars.
Although this simple vehicle was quite successful, production was abandoned at the end of 1910. Skadden had realized that the future belonged to more elaborately constructed, "right" vehicles. As early as April 1910, Skadden renamed the company to Norwalk Motor Car Company and produced appropriate vehicles. Although he thus spared the car bug the fate of most other highwheeler, the Norwalk Motor Car Company failed first.
The car bug had the highwheeler typical, large wooden spoke wheels from the carriage. The engine was powered by a 22 hp NACC standard engine (NACC: National Automobile Chamber of Commerce , SAE predecessor ). He was locked to the unsprung rear axle.
