In 1901, James A. Moncrief completed a steam engine of his own design in Pawtucket , Rhode Island , USA . The steam engine , a two-cylinder with standing tube boiler, was made for him by the Pawtucket Steamboat Company according to him. The chassis of the Moncrief King Bee consisted of steel tubes. The vehicle had wheels made of wood and solid rubber tires. The power transmission took place via a chain on the rear axle. The steam car convinced the Pawtucket Steamboat Co. so that they could produce more copies under the brand name Pawtucket Steam took over. Moncrief subsequently became the company's managing director.
The machine of the Pawtucket Steam made 7 HP according to former calculation formula. The vehicle was karrossed as a two-seat runabout ( roadster ) and weighed about 1700 lb (770 kg). It had 35 and 14 gal. (132.5 and 53 liters) quite large tanks for water and gasoline and accordingly a long range . It was followed by lighter versions with 1100 lb (500 kg) and 800 lb (363 kg) but the car production was abandoned in 1902.
