Marlborough Engineering Limited was a early New Zealand manufacturer of automobiles . The brand name was Marlborough .
The British John North Birch emigrated to New Zealand in 1905. In 1912 , he founded the company in Blenheim . He made engines and began developing an automobile. The car production ran from 1919 to 1922. Birch moved to Gisborne in 1922 and later founded the Carlton Car Company .
Birch also made boat engines and stationary engines. For his automobiles, he developed a four-cylinder engine with 5823 cc capacity , which is described as being very complex. Eventually he used a motor from another manufacturer these larger cars used for Taxis.
