The MG ZT is a sporty version of the Rover 75 and was manufactured by MG at the Rover Longbridge plant . There was also a estate version called MG ZT-T . The design is similar to that of the Rover 75, with heavier springs and other suspension improvements for better road holding. Production began in the summer of 2001 and ended in mid-2005 with the financial ruin of the MG Rover Group .
History
In June 2001, just under three years after the launch of the Rover 75 and a year after the detachment of BMW's MG Rover Group , the MG ZT saloon and in October the Kombi MG ZT-T were introduced. During the development phase these models were called X10 and X11.The design of the car is based on the Rover 75, but the models have a sportier and more aggressive look. Peter Stephens, designer of the McLaren F1, took the lead in the construction of the car.
In late summer 2003, the particularly sporty version ZT 260+ (codenamed X12 and X13) was presented with the 4.6-liter V8 engine of the Ford Mustang . The model had to be converted for this purpose from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive and was largely engineered by the motorsport and engineering firm Prodrive before it came back to MG Rover. The 4.6-liter version is considered a true understated car. The only externally visible difference between the 260 and other ZT are the fourfold exhaust pipes. Also in 2003, an aerodynamically optimized and equipped with a 6-liter V8 (765 hp) equipped MG ZT-T, codename X15 was the fastest combined wagon in the world with a top speed of 360.9 km / h. at the 55th annual Bonneville Speed Week on the Bonneville Flats (Utah) .
In the spring of 2004 MG revised the design of the models ZT and ZT-T, with which the front was similar to the modified Rover 75 at the same time. After MG Rover went bankrupt in May 2005, two months later, NAC bought the company in China. The production of the MG ZT started again in the spring of 2007 under the name MG 7 .
