History

The 1962 Meteor Mercury version based on the new, medium-sized Ford Fairlane The Meteors had a unique rear quarter panels that had  Monterey's jet-pod style tail lights.. On offer were the base meteor and a Meteor Custom as a coupe and sedan, and the Meteor S-33 as a sporty made-up coupe variant. It came with a Thriftpower 2.8-liter straight-six (102 SAE-PS / 75 kW) or Windsor V8 engines of 3.6 liters (147 SAE-PS / 107 kW) and 4.3 liter displacement (166 SAE-PS / 122 kW). In 1963, the model range was extended by a five-door station wagon Cruiser and Meteor Custom 4-door 6- and 8-seater Estate Cars and Meteor 4-door 6- and 8-seater Estate Cars. and also a convertible .For 1963, Meteors received a trim update and the addition of two more body styles, a four-door estate station wagon and a two-door hardtop coupé. The both the base Meteor and better-trimmed Meteor Custom were available as two-and four-door sedans.

The more sporty Meteor S-33  featuring premium exterior trim and interior bucket seats, with a center console price new in 1963 $2,404. The hardtop coupe was added to the Meteor Custom and Meteor S-33 series. From model year 1964, the meteor accounted for small numbers. In fact, it was replaced by the Mercury Comet , which was actually the next smaller model, but in fact the comet was almost the same size as the meteor.

The station wagon was referred to as the Mercury Country Cruise and featured simulated wood-grain trim on the exterior.
