The Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicle ,  (Oshkosh JLTV) , is after several years of development and selection process by the US Army and the States United Marine Corps in 2015 jointly chosen, light, off-road and protected military vehicle, For the most part, it will replace the all-terrain Humvee, which is not protected in its original design, during the 2018-2040 procurement period. The total procurement package by 2040 includes 54,599 vehicles, 5,500 for the Marines and 49,099 for the Army for a total of $ 30.04 billion. In advance, $ 980 million was spent on research and development. 

The manufacturer Oshkosh Defense , a subsidiary of on special and military vehicles specialized Oshkosh Corporation in Oshkosh (Wisconsin) , sat down with the design side's competing designs BRV-O of AM General , manufacturer of the Humvee , and JLTV of Lockheed Martin Corp, which took place in cooperation with the arms company BAE Systems . The first partial order includes 16,901 vehicles for $ 6.7 billion, including the total order for the US Marines of 5,500 vehicles. 

The vehicle is available in a two-man utility version (JLTV-UTL) with a payload of 2.3 tons (5100 pounds) and in two four-man versions, the General Purpose (JLTV-GP) for general transport and Close Combat Weapons Carrier (JLTV -CCWC), ie about Armed Combat Vehicle . with a payload of just over 1.5 tons (3,500 pounds). Until the selection as JLTV of the US Forces Oshkosh called the vehicle as a Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV) .

The Oshkosh JLTV, unlike the Oshkosh M-ATV , can be carried by the US Air Force's Hercules C-130 cargo plane due to its size and weight , and is also air-portable with the CH-47 Chinook Army and CH-53 Super Stallion transport helicopters the marines. His weight makes him even in larger numbers still suitable for the amphibious ships of the US Navy . The vehicle should also be effectively protected against landmines , booby traps and ambush attacks (mine-resistant, ambush-protected MRAP ), such as the much heavier MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle , M-ATV for short ,  the US Armed Forces Oshkosh had procured, as the Humvee despite retrofitting with various armor proved to be unsafe for the war in Afghanistan and especially the Iraq war . In the first four months of 2006 alone, during the height of the uprising in Iraq, 67 US troops in Humvees died from bomb blasts. 

In addition to the built-in protective elements in the base vehicle (which are referred to as A-kit), the Oshkosh JLTV from the outset with mounting options for other protective elements and armor equipped, and designed for their weight. These attachable protective elements are referred to in their entirety as a B-kit. A-Kit Stanag Level 1 / B-Kit Stanag Level 3. This configuration provides a very good protection when needed, but also allows to dispense in safe areas for weight reasons on it.

The Oshkosh JLTV achieves a road speed of 112 km / h (70 mph) and very good off-road capability with its strong Duramax diesel engine and Oshkosh TAK-4 independent suspension . An active suspension system also allows the ground clearance to be adjusted by 50 cm (20 inches ); the chassis can thus lowered for better road holding or for improved off-road are raised  . The predecessor Humvee had originally also excellent terrain characteristics, but lost them by retrofitted armor clearly, since its body , suspension , brake systemand engine were not designed. In addition, these modifications led to overloading of the Humvees, which again significantly increased the already high expenditure for maintenance and repair of the vehicles.

The Oshkosh JLTV meets the requirements of a climbing ability of 60 percent (= 31 degrees), a tilt angle of more than 30 percent and a climbing ability of 45 cm (18 inch)  . The turning circle of Oshkosh JLTV is despite its size at only 7.6 meters, its wading in salt water is 1.5 meters. The wagon is designed to operate in a temperature range of -40 to + 52 ° C and operates at altitudes above 3,600 meters above sea level. The vehicle is equipped to further enhance safety with an automatic fire extinguishing system , a fuel tank extinguishing system and several exit options for the crew. 

The Duramax engine for the vehicle is supplied by General Motors . It is a heavy 6.8-liter V8 diesel engine that delivers up to 224 kW (305 hp) and 705 Nm of torque. The automatic transmission is from Allison Transmission .

The Close Combat Weapons Carrier (JLTV-CCWC) version can be either a manned turret with the heavy machine gun Browning M2 or a remotely controllable weapon station of the type CROWS ( Common Remotely Operated Weapon station )  to be added. The weapon station can be equipped with various weapons such as the Mk 19 40mm machine grenade launcher or Browning M2, M240 or M249 SAW machine guns .Some JLTVs are also expected to be equipped with the BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile . 

The average total cost per unit in financial year 2015 is approximately $ 677,000. Over the entire duration of the program, they are expected to fall to $ 550,000 according to current expectations.
