bb GmbH & Co (Buchmann)
The bb GmbH & Co KG car was in Frankfurt -based tuner of automobiles. In addition to the tuning area, the company also produced at least one independent vehicle. In individual publications, the operation is shortened to bb ,or Buchmann . In the 1970s and 1980s bb mainly revised models from Porsche , Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen . The focus was on the body tuning. The cars of bb were mostly unique pieces whose concrete design was oriented to the customer's wishes. In the 1970s and 1980s bb became famous with spectacular production cars "that were far ahead of their time". However, the company could not keep permanently on the market. In 1986 it was dissolved as a result of bankruptcy. 28 years later - in 2014 - company founder Rainer Buchmann began re-establishing the bb brand .
bb was founded in 1973 as bb Auto Exklusiv Service KG and represented by Rainer Buchmann, who is described in several publications as a former mechanical engineering, business administration and psychology student.
Since 1973, bb has modified Porsche models on customer request. Initially, the company limited itself to upgrade the interior of the car individually and offer special finishes. Other features included, among other things, leather upholstery; individual copies should also have been provided with gilded dashboards. 1976 bb built the complete Porsche 930 in a Porsche 911 SC Targa("911 Turbo") drive technology and strengthened the Targa body, each with a steel crossbar under the dashboard and in the area of the rear passenger compartment. It was not, as described in many publications, a conversion of the coupe in a Targa. Such a conversion would not have been technically possible, since Targa and Coupé are different bodies that can not be converted to the other type of construction. bb painted the converted vehicle in the rainbow colors of the instant camera manufacturer Polaroid . Polaroid exhibited the car known as the "Rainbow Porsche" at Photokina 1976 on its stand.
From 1976 bb extended the offer on body modifications. The conversions were each done by hand; a plumber employed at bb made the sheet metal parts individually. Among the specialties of the company the synthesis of various Porsche body concepts belonged to a single model. In particular, a car called Flatnose Porsche was known , which technically on the Porsche 930 ("911 Turbo") built, but was provided with a leaning on the Porsche 928 flat front end and the roof section of the 911 Targa (including the rear panoramic window) had. This model first appeared in 1977 and was manufactured in larger quantities in the following years. Besides emerged Cabriolet and Targa versions of the Porsche 928.
Buchmann also dealt with VW products. Here in particular VW Polo - and Golf models modified, the changes were the body and the interior decoration.
In 1979, 16 employees worked in the company.
Bb also took on orders for the redesign of Mercedes-Benz vehicles at the beginning of the 1980s. These included, among others, convertible versions for the coupes of the former S-Class , with ten cars were also made with movable metal roof ("Magic Top"). Particularly striking was a red painted Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, which was rebuilt with freestanding fenders in the style of the 1930s. For this purpose, bb extended the wheelbase by 70 cm and increased the track width by 30 cm. The single piece was commissioned by the Saudi Arabian king Khalid ibn Abd al-Aziz .
At the beginning of the 1980s, there was a change of name . The company name was now bb GmbH & Co Auto KG .
Motor vehicle production
The company was also active in the production of stand-alone vehicles. One source describes it as a manufacturer of sports cars and tuning , ie sports car manufacturer and tuning company. 1978 Buchmann hired the former Porsche employee Eberhard Schulz. Based on the preliminary work of Schulz of "dream car" was CW 311 built. Other sources confirm the production of this car by BB Buchmann. It was one of the most aerodynamic and fastest sports car in the world with a top speed of over 300 km / h.
Buchmann maintained its own development center since the late 1970s, in which - unusual for the industry - some technical innovations were conceived. This included car electronics in the broader sense as an infrared transmitter to use with central locking, Distance warning for parking and digital dashboards . The 1979 at the International Motor Showpresented digital driver information system "Dinfos" was divided into three areas and displayed in the middle of the most important data such as speed and mileage, while small values were normally displayed in the two lateral areas, as long as not a dangerous accident, such as oil pressure loss or black ice danger temporarily in the main panel were visualized. Long before the series production of metallic paintsBuchmann painted in 1978 ten VW Golf with by Merck developed for him iriodin pearlescent paints. In 1980, Buchmann introduced the safety motorcycle "futuro". In addition to an aerodynamic full fairing the prototype had an innovative for the time safety landing gear. 1983, Buchmann filed a patent for a multifunction steering wheel and a talking cockpit.
The CW 311
The developments of bb were received with interest by the press. In the spring of 1977, a bb car appeared on the front page of auto motor und sport for the first time with the Rainbow Porsche . The same magazine, as well as Road & Track from the United States showed the CW 311 on the front page. Playboy , Der Spiegel , Stern , sport autoand the magazine hobby devoted to the bb products multi-sided contributions.
The CW 311 also BB-Mercedes CW 311 presented in 1978 super sports car study of bb Auto Exclusiv Service KG from Frankfurt.

Eberhard Schulz , at that time a developer at Porsche , and later founder of the Isdera brand , had an idea of a successor to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL in the 1970s . As a partner he found the tuner Rainer Buchmann from bb Auto Exklusiv Service. Together, they developed the CW 311 based on Mercedes-Benz and Porsche parts. The development period lasted from 1972 to 1978 and ended with the presentation of the prototype in 1978, which was presented to the public under the B + B brand. They put the Mercedes-Benz star on the car without asking permission from the manufacturer; However, given the great publicity Daimler-Benz waived sanctions. This makes the CW 311 the only car developed outside Daimler-Benz that can carry a star. The car also carried the big lettering B + B. He remained a fully roadworthy single piece, which in 1978 received the TÜV approval.
Based on this study built the later Isdera vehicles. Some look very similar to the original and are often confused by viewers with the prototype. The whereabouts of the original are unknown. The later built vehicles were introduced in 1983 as Isdera Imperator 108i .The body of the CW 311 is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic on a tubular frame .
The two developers chose an AMG- revised Mercedes-Benz M-100 engine from the Mercedes 600 as their engine . The 6.3 liter eight cylinder bore of 103 mm with and a stroke of 95 mm was applied to a power of 375 hp at 5200 min brought and behind the seats installed. The engine had a torque of 580 Nm at a speed of 3000 min -1 . The tailpipes of the exhaust system flowed in front of the left rear wheel.
The headlights of the car were provided with covers painted in body color. To use the headlights, the covers had to be removed. They were later revised again and made of a material that was so translucent despite the paint in body color that the flasher could be operated with closed covers. They had to be removed for a night trip. The car was originally painted white with black B + B lettering.
The front hood was closed when parked vehicle. When driving off, she lowered and released the ventilation of the radiator. Also, the air flowing through made for more downforce on the front axle. This construction had only the prototype. It was no longer used in the later Isdera vehicles. The car had gullwing doors, with the gables of the gullwing doors being removable so that only load-bearing parts remained. The CW-311 prototype had a different wheelbase and was smaller than its successor to Isdera. They were made longer or larger in order to make room so that in the future different engines could be used and also large occupants found comfortable place.
The goal of Schulz was to break the 300 km / h border, which, according to the builder, succeeded. The specified maximum speed of 320 km / h was given.

Bankruptcy in 1986
In the mid-1980s, Buchmann's sales declined as much as in the entire tuning industry. The fall of the US dollar affected both the US customers and customers from the Middle East. Bb went bankrupt in the spring of 1986. Shortly before the vehicle sales had yet been extended to Japan. At peak times Buchmann had more than 40 employees. Following the bankruptcy of his company Rainer Buchmann has long worked as a management consultant.
New beginning 2014
In September 2014 Rainer Buchmann started a comeback in the automotive industry in Frankfurt am Main. Buchmann presented the "bb Moonracer", a reinterpretation of the 1976 rainbow turbo targa based on a 1980s Porsche Targa. The performance of the air-cooled six-cylinder Boxer turbocharged engine was increased to 330 hp. A tablet computer in the center console and a removable glass roof bring the vehicle technically up to date.
