The Ferrari P2 is a car that took part in the World Sportscar Championship in 1965 .

Two entirely new cars, the 275 P2 and 330 P2, followed in 1965. Featuring lower and lighter chassis and more aerodynamic body, the cars were paired with revamped versions of the previous 275 and 330 V12, now equipped with four camshafts and producing 350hp and 410hp, respectively. The 330 P2 was first used by Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team (NART) in the Daytona race that year. In 1965 275 P2 0836 won the 1000 km of Monza, 275 P2 0828 won the Targa Florio, 330 P2 0828 won the Nurburgring 1000 km, and 365 P2 0836or0838 won the 12 hr. Reims. The P2 cars were replaced by the P3 for 1966.

The project

Ferrari P2, built by Ferrari to compete in the worldwide prototypes of 1965, was produced in two versions, the 275 P2 and P2 330 . These represent the natural evolution of the P 275 and P 330 that had over the season 1964. The engines were the same that equipped the previous versions, but on P2 is passed to the distribution DOHC , which along with new carburetors of Weber increased the power of the two cars, 350 respectively CVfor 275 P2 and 410 hp for the 330 P2. The frame was completely redesigned from the previous version. To the classic trellis d 'tubes steel were riveted of the plates d' aluminum , so as to increase the rigidity of the car without excessive increases in weight. This solution, invented by the British assemblers Formula One , had been used by for the first time since Ferrari on the 158 , the car that the previous year had won the drivers' title with John Surtees . The P2 accounted for Ferrari the first application of this technique in a sports car. The body, in boat , was made of aluminum. Than previous cars were abandoned circles ray, which were replaced by new and lighter made of alloy magnesium . In total 275 they were produced four P2, identified by the chassis number 0826, 0828, 0832 and 0836 . Two, the 0828 and 0832, will be changed to 330 P2. To these we add a third 330 P2, built from scratch, with chassis number 0838 The season 1965

The challenge of the Ford

At the beginning of the sixties , the Ferrari was in financial crisis, and Enzo Ferrari decided to sell the majority of his company. Not satisfied with the offer of Fiat , turned American Ford , who have long sought a way to enter the world of competitions. In fact, the true will of Enzo Ferrari was only to get an answer better offer from Fiat itself, as it turned. Ford, realized the deception, he decided to produce their own a race car to challenge Ferrari. In collaboration with Carroll Shelby , in 1964 he created the GT40 , which will become the biggest opponent of Ferrari in the World prototypes for the three years to come.

The races

The first race of the season, the 2000 km of Daytona , he ran 28 February. The only 330 P2 in the race, crewed Surtees / Rodríguez , won the pole . This car was also raced by the team NART , who also fielded a 275P and P 330 . None of the three cars managed to cross the finish line, respectively, for the breaking of the ' propeller shaft , the clutch and differential . The first place was won by a GT40 . At the next race, the 12 Hours of Sebring , which was won by a Chaparral 2A , did not take off any P2 . The 1000 km Monza , Ferrari officially deployed three cars, two 330 P2 and P2 275. It was precisely the latter to win the victory, with the crew Parkes / Guichet . In second place giunsa one of 330 P2, with Surtees and Scarfiotti driving. In third place giunsa a GT40. The other 330 P2 in the race, raced by Lorenzo Bandini , had to retreat to a broken suspension .

The next race attended by the P2 was the Targa Florio , who ran on May 9. Ferrari 275 P2 three sided, driven by the crews Vaccarella / Bandini, Guichet / Baghetti and Scarfiotti / Parkes. Vaccarella was able to win the pole, marking the new 39 minutes and 21 seconds of the track record, with an average of 109.784 km / h . Vaccarella and Bandini then conquered the victory, ahead of two Porsche 904  . The other two 275 P2 in the race were both forced to retire, one for the steering problems, that caused an accident, the other in response to an output of the track On 23 May it ran the 1000 km Nürburgring . On this occasion, the 330 crew Surtees P2 / Scarfiotti conquered the pole position and the victory, as well as scoring the fastest lap in the race with Surtees driving. The 275 P2, also officially entered by Ferrari, came second with the crew Parkes / Guichet. A second 275 P2, brought to the race from the private Maranello Concessionaires team, who had scored with Graham Hill driving the second fastest time in the trials, but in the race he had to retire due to an electrical problem  . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he entered two Ferrari 330 P2, but were not accepted by the race direction. The first and second place went to still another Ferrari car, the 250 LM . At the end of the season, thanks to the victories of the P2, but also the 250 LM and 365 P2 , Ferrari won the constructors world title.
