The Cosworth Vega was ahead of its time and had it appeared five years later it may well have had better sales. Chevrolet brought out the compact sedan/coupe in 1970 to battle with growing imports. It came with a top engine option of the 110bhp (82kW), 140ci (2.3-litre) four-cylinder, which was criticized as being coarse.
In 1973 Chevy had Cosworth develop the fastest Vega yet to enhance its sporty yet economical nature, vital in the fuel conscious mid-1970s making it one of the few cars by Chevrolet to meet emissions in all the US states. In previous years DeLorean had authorized engine designer Calvin Wade to go to England to find a better cylinder head technology with shorter stroke, aluminum cylinder head and 16 valves, and initiate Cosworth production back in the USA .The engine was 15 lbs lighter than the previous engine.
Cosworth used the alloy block but with a shorter stroke for 122ci (2-litre), then added an alloy twin-cam 16v head. Special pistons and electronic fuel injection saw output at 130bhp (97kW) initially, though production versions actually only managed 110bhp (82kW), due to lower compression for emissions. Uprated suspension, quicker steering and low axle gears of 3.73:1 in 1975 helped acceleration; optional limited slip differential and 6x13-inch gold-painted cast aluminum wheels (152x330mm) aided handling.
1975: All Cosworth Vegas in 1975 were finished in black with gold "Cosworth Twin Cam" logo and steering wheel emblem. With black or white vinyl interiors.
1976: A Borg-Warner five-speed manual overdrive transmission interior colors, Firethorn and Buckskin. Exterior colors: Antique White, Medium Orange,Dark Blue and various Metallic paint options with anti-rust improvements to body a new grill and tail lamps.
The Limited total production of 3,508 cars ended in July 1976.
