Kaiser Darrin 161 history
1953 to 1954
Body versions :
Gasoline 2.7 liters
The Kaiser Darrin was an American sports car , which the Kaiser-Frazer Corporation in Willow Run, Michigan , released in November 1953 as "Model 1954". The vehicle was constructed by Howard "Dutch" Darrin of Darrin Automotive Design .
The two-door, two-seater cabriolet in pontoon shape was one of the first cars to ever have a body made of glass fiber reinforced plastic The body was molded in two sections . The frame came from Henry J . The doors were designed as sliding doors and could be retracted for opening forward in the front fenders. The relatively small grille had the shape of a pie slice and was tip down. The roof could be locked in three positions.
The car had a front longitudinally mounted six-cylinder inline engine with interchangeable control , 2639 cc and 90 hp (66 kW) power at 4200 / min, which supplied the subsidiary of Kaiser-Frazer, Willys-Overland . A manual three-speed transmission, the engine power was forwarded to the rear wheels.
Already in the middle of 1954 the production was stopped. By Type 161 only 435 were manufactured.
For the model year 1955 instead of a convertible, the new Darrin was a 2-seater coupe. The remarkable door mechanism - an invention by Howard Darrin in 1922 - has been retained. Instead of the somewhat powerless Willys engine now the V8 of the Cadillac Eldorado was used. The overhead engine had a displacement of 5426 cc and developed 270 hp (198.5 kW) at 4600 .In the following year, the otherwise unchanged Darrin received the 1956 Eldorado V8 engine with 5981 cc and 305 hp (224 kW) at 4700 / min. Also this year, only a new engine came, again from the Cadillac Eldorado. He still had 5981 cc, but developed 325 hp (239 kW) at 4800 / min.
In the last year of production, a more powerful Eldorado engine was used again. With unchanged displacement he now made 335 hp (246 kW) at 4800 / min. After four years, the 50 bodies left that Darrin had bought from Kaiser-Willys were sold. This finished the production.
