Replace Car alternator bushes
Most alternators have brushes fitted into a plastic brush holder, held to the rear casing of the alternator by two or three
screws or bolts. With a screwdriver or spanner, undo the securing screws or bolts and lift out the brush holder. Remove the brushes and check them for
wear A few types of brush simply push out of the holder on others you have to remove the screw holding the brush lead and then remove the brush. If you have a Bosch
alternator, the brush leads have to be unsoldered to remove the brushes. If you do not want to do this part of the job take the brush holder to an auto electrician
who will fit new ones for you.
If the brushes are less than 1/4in. (7 mm) in length you should renew them.
Some manufacturers supply the new brushes complete with the brush holder so renewal is simply a case of removing the old holder .and replacing it with
the new one. FIt the new brushes to the holder, soldering them if necessary Finally, replace the brush holder, make sure the brushes are seated on the slip rings, and tighten the screws.
